Keynote call to action: Rethinking innovation in urology
Dr. Vin Gupta urges urologists to embrace practical, patient-centered technologies—even if they’re not perfect.

At AUA2025, Vin Gupta, MD, MPA, delivered the inaugural keynote address, urging the urology community to embrace "imperfect innovation" in health care. He highlighted how technologies like smart mirrors and toilet seats are revolutionizing diagnostics globally but face slow adoption in the U.S. due to regulatory hurdles. Dr. Gupta, who is managing director of health care innovation at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips and former CMO of Amazon Pharmacy, emphasized the need for scalable, patient-friendly solutions to address challenges like hypertension and the aging population.
He questioned the reliance on traditional tools, noting that many patients dislike standard blood pressure cuffs, leading to underutilization. Instead, he advocated for integrating technology into everyday objects to make health monitoring more accessible and acceptable.
Dr. Gupta also discussed the success of at-home care models, citing data showing reduced readmission rates for congestive heart failure patients. He stressed that, although these innovations may not be perfect, they offer significant improvements over current practices.
