AUA2025 will offer a glimpse into the future of urology
AUA2025 will feature innovative formats, trending topics in urology and sessions that promise to shape the future of the field.

David Penson, MD, AUA secretary
To get a preview of the meeting, AUA Daily News spoke with Dr. David Penson, the AUA secretary, who shared his insights and top picks.
Q: As AUA secretary, what are you most excited about this year and why?
I’m most excited about the increased focus on guidelines at this year’s meeting. Our attendees consistently tell us that this material is incredibly valuable to them, so we’ve elevated the presence of guidelines in the program. Importantly, we’re moving away from traditional didactic lectures. Instead, we’re introducing clinical guideline panels into the plenary sessions. This new format will offer greater clinical context and give attendees a behind-the-scenes look at how the AUA addresses controversies and disagreements during the guideline development process. I think it’ll be a more dynamic and memorable experience. I expect the back-and-forth of the panels will result in some entertaining and memorable moments.
Q: What do you think is the hottest topic for education at AUA2025?
It’s tough to choose just one because the meeting is packed with outstanding material. We’ve got exciting content on focal therapy in prostate cancer, telesurgery, the role of aspiration devices in stone surgery and the increasing use of robotic surgery in reconstruction. There’s really something for everyone.
Q: Are there any plenary or P2 sessions attendees absolutely shouldn’t miss?
Definitely. I’m particularly excited about the Friday morning P2 (practice-changing, paradigm-shifting, clinical trials in urology) studies in urologic oncology. In particular, there are several studies of new agents in non-muscle invasive bladder cancer being presented that will fundamentally change the way we treat these malignancies. Specifically, final results from the registration studies for the TAR200 device and cretostimogene will be presented. These are the data that the FDA will use to hopefully approve these important new therapies. Attendees simply will not want to miss this.
Q: What session are you personally most looking forward to?
Aside from the P2s, I’m really looking forward to the Lattimer Lecture on Telesurgery, which will be delivered by Dr. Vip Patel on Friday afternoon. Telesurgery is the future of our specialty, and Dr. Patel is a true leader in the field. I think attendees will be surprised at how close we are to integrating this technology into everyday practice.
