Pathway to publication
Getting published in JU Open Plus leads to a Video Abstract Theater premiere.
JU Open Plus is an international, peer-reviewed, open-access publication of the American Urological Association that features research from all areas of urology.
Professor John Davis, MD, editor-in-chief of JU Open Plus, said publications like this are the growing trend in communicating peer-reviewed science to the world in a format that is open to everyone to read without subscription barriers.
“Authors keep their copyrights, and the journal has multiple scientific method-formatted sections to accommodate communications,” he said. “JUOP is the academic extension of The Journal of Urology® and can cover a range of topics and impact from academic progress to clinical practice-changing information.”
The sections are divided into six key areas:
- Reviews
- Clinical trial outcomes
- Retrospective reviews
- Health services research
- Rare conditions
- Videos as manuscripts
The latest articles selected for publication in JU Open Plus as part of the Pathway to Publication process will be featured in this year’s Video Abstract Theater, happening throughout AUA2024.
“Our Pathway to Publication opportunity invited the highest-rated abstracts in video format to be submitted for the Annual Meeting,” Dr. Davis said. “Some author groups accepted this pathway, and their videos will be published at the time of the meeting.”
Among those articles that have been accepted are:
“Enhancing Urology Resident Training in Vasectomies Through a 3D Printed Simulation Model.” This video shows trainees how to prepare a vasectomy with a printed model and curriculum to proceed in a step-by-step manner.
“How Effective Is Ureteroscopic Irrigation at Evacuating Stone Dust?” This will provide viewers with a technical model review on various ureteroscopic irrigation models to determine the best methods of clearing stone fragments.
Dr. Davis, who is also an associate professor of urology and director of the prostate cancer surgery program at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas, said the editorial board is made up of urology professionals from different corners of the urology profession.
“We have a large, diverse and international editorial board with a full range of experts ready to help review and optimize our manuscripts for publication,” he said. “Reviewers have the opportunity to publish editorial comments on new papers to continue the peer review process and academic discourse.”
