While you’re still taking in everything you learned at AUA2022, it’s not too early to start thinking ahead to AUA2023. Next year’s conference will take place April 28 to May 1 in Chicago.

It’s not the first time the AUA Annual Meeting has come to the Windy City, and AUA Secretary John D. Denstedt, MD, FRCSC, FACS, FCAHS, said the AUA is looking forward to returning to the McCormick Place convention facility.

“We’ll be taking the lessons we learned hosting virtual meetings during the pandemic and strategizing about what is best for 2023,” he said. “We’ve taken what we’ve learned in terms of how to deliver online education while still having a great in-person meeting with all of the important networking and social aspects that have been missing for the last two or three years.”

In addition to the usual state-of-the-art lectures on a variety of topics, next year’s event will bring back some of the more popular components from this year’s event, including the Robotics Theater and semi-live video presentations featuring highly edited videos of surgical procedures to bring attendees the latest in technology, treatments and techniques.

“Urology is a very technology-dependent specialty,” Dr. Denstedt said. “We always present updates on the latest new technology for treating various conditions, and surgical robotics is a very important part of urological surgery, so that will be back next year.”

Attendees in Chicago can also expect updates on the newest diagnostic and treatment tools in urologic oncology.

“With urology as a community, about half of what we do is focused on cancer treatment,” said Dr. Denstedt, “so there will be a lot next year that focuses specifically on urologic oncology.”

For the main plenary in 2023, be on the lookout for updates on new guidelines that will shape urological treatments going forward. These include guidelines for the detection of prostate cancer and upper tract urothelial carcinoma. Dr. Denstedt said these will be presented along with sessions aimed at keeping material as interesting as possible for those who attend.

“We try to make it so it’s not just lecture after lecture,” he said. “We want to include more interactive sessions, with point-counterpoint and question-and-answer sessions.”

As you plan to travel to Chicago for AUA2023, don’t forget to schedule some time to look around the city. When the day’s activities at McCormick Place are done, Chicago offers plenty to keep you busy. From the Ferris wheel at the Navy Pier to the famed deep-dish pizza or a selfie at “The Bean,” there’s more than enough to keep you entertained.

“Chicago is a very dynamic city, and we’re excited to be there,” said Dr. Denstedt.
